Dining Out
Overview
One of the hardest things to do when you are on a diet is to eat out. Dining out involves a lot of temptations from numerous delicious dishes wherein you might consider quitting your diet just to enjoy the food. But it does not have to be that way. It is still possible for you to stay on your diet and enjoy the foods you love, without the stress of gaining weight. The most important thing to be conscious of when dining out is your portion size. Most restaurants will provide you with much more than you need, so try to eat as if you would eat at home in light of your given dietary regimen. Always remember that with proper planning and preparation, you can make it through any challenge. Here are a few helpful tips to consider when dining out.
- Watch the portion sizes - ask the waiter to wrap up half of your food for you to take home. This will allow you to limit you calorie intake and help resist against the temptations of overeating.
- Plan Ahead - Take the time to look up the menu ahead of time to see what kind of healthy alternatives the restaurant offers. Try eating lighter meals throughout the day if you plan to consume a large meal. Do not skip meals because such actions can backfire and make you overeat later.
- Avoid Buffets - Even the strictest dieter can have problems at a buffet. The temptation of a never ending supply of the foods you love can kill portion control and can cause you to over eat.
- Have a Snack Beforehand - This will allow you to temporarily fill up which will prevent you from making detrimental choices from the big menu. Trying consuming a bottle of water before a meal.
- Watch the Alcohol - You should always drink in moderation. Alcoholic beverages are usually high in calories and have the tendency to make you eat more.
- Careful at the Salad Bar - Be sure to limit the amount of dressings and additional toppings on your salad. Such toppings can contain a lot of fat and calories and may not be as healthy as you think.
- Make Healthy Choices - Enjoy dishes that are grilled, broiled, steamed, baked, or roasted more often than fried, breaded, sautéed, or creamed.
- Make Special Request - Don’t be afraid to ask for your food the way you like it. After all, it’s your body, diet, and money that are accountable for whatever you take in.
